In Snowmass Village where we first met!
In Snowmass Village where we first met!

Teika and Sam were set to go on their first date where they met in Aspen. Teika, however, texted that afternoon that "I don't think I'll be able to make it tonight, since I hurt my knee skiing." Sam, leaving back to Austin the next day, thought she was politely standing him up and wished her the best.

It turned out, however, that Teika had a legitimate excuse! She was in the hospital with a torn ACL and would need to stay in Aspen for a couple more weeks for surgery.

So Sam returned two weeks later and they went on their first real date, with hot chocolate under the cold snowy stars. Sam flew back to be with Teika in Aspen every chance he got. Without a torn ACL, we would have never had the chance to fall in love!

With Teika back in D.C. and Sam working in Texas, a brief long-distance relationship began, meeting up every few weeks to go on adventures from Montana and the Pacific Northwest to New Hampshire and Maine. It didn't last long because Sam, falling head over heels, shortly moved in with Teika in their tiny Mass Ave apartment.

In between their travels and Teika's work in the White House, they bought a home in Georgetown, celebrating holidays with friends and family. Teika taught Sam how to cook and uphill mountains. They took every opportunity they could to continue their hiking journeys from Patagonia to the Alps.

Until one day...

Sam asked Teika to marry him in their living room, next to a handbuilt mountain reminiscient of the first hill they climbed together with a working toy gondola. She said yes and their love story continues on! So, please join us next June in the town where we met, ride the real gondola, and celebrate atop the mountain with us!

How to get to Aspen?
We recommend flying into Aspen Airport (ASE). It's easy to find connecting flights daily from a variety of airports. The Aspen airport is a very quick 10-minute drive to town and one upside is that if you fly into ASE directly, you do not need to rent a car while in Aspen. Many of the hotels offer shuttles into town, there is a free public bus system (RFTA), and Uber is now available. Once you arrive in Aspen, the town, hikes, and our event locations are completely walkable. You can also download the Downtowner app to order free rides around the town of Aspen (courtesy of the city!)
Alternatively, you can fly into Denver (DEN), rent a car, and drive approximately four hours to Aspen. Flying into Denver can be cheaper, but you will likely need to rent a car. Other airports nearby that you could consider that have shuttles available: Vail (EGE), approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes from Aspen by car and Grand Junction (GJT), approximately 2 hours from Aspen by car.
Where to stay?
There are plenty of lodging options in Aspen, and we have secured great discounts at two amazing options. We suggest staying “in town” of Aspen if possible where everything will be in walking distance. If you need more suggestions, do not hesitate to ask! Bookings for June 2026 will open in late July 2025; we recommend booking as soon as they open to secure the best discounted rate.
A cute new boutique hotel in downtown Aspen that is walking distance to everything in town, and all of our events. Use a to-be-determined code to secure a 15% discount (rates ~$450/nt).
Join Teika & Sam at their favorite hotel in Aspen, operated by the ski company at the base of Aspen mountain next to the gondola station. Call them and tell them you are part of the Carlson-Ginn wedding for a 20% discount (rates ~$600/nt, 3-night minimum).
For a more affordable, but equally convenient option, the Hotel Durant offers a comfortable stay right in the heart of Aspen. We don't have any discounts, but rates will start around ~$300/nt.
Frequently Asked Questions
What will the weather be like in Aspen then?
While unpredictable, we hope for a sunny day in the high 60s with the top of the mountain being a bit cooler. Nevertheless, ask any local about the mountains and you'll hear: "if you don't like the weather, wait 20 minutes." A rogue thunderstorm can roll through at a moment's notice despite all the sunshine earlier in the day and be out before one can put on a coat.
What happens if it rains?
The ceremony will continue on top of the mountain rain, shine, or snow! Umbrellas will be provided if necessary. While the ceremony will be outside, the reception will take place inside. In the event of lightning, the gondola will have a brief mandatory pause, but lightning storms move quickly out of the area.
How to prepare for the altitude?
Aspen is located at 7,891ft and the ceremony & celebration will be at 11,212ft! You are over two miles above sea level so there is substantially less oxygen, and altitude sickness can happen to anyone. The best way to prevent it is to stay hydrated, consuming way more water than you think necessary (alcohol hits the brain much faster at elevation!). Even better is if you can spend a couple days extra in Aspen before the wedding to acclimatize. If you do, let us know and we can help with activity planning!
What is the wedding day attire?
For gentlemen, we suggest a nice suit & tie while for ladies any cocktail dress works! Wear fun colors or anything that you fancy! The ceremony will be outside and the top of the mountain can get a bit chilly, so you will probably want to bring a sweater for the outside portion of the event.
What about dietary restrictions?
We will accomodate any and all dietary restrictions you may have, just let us know of any when you RSVP!
How do I RSVP?
RSVPs will open when you receive your formal invitation ~6 months before the wedding.
Any other questions?
Call or text Teika (203-232-2990) or Sam (708-712-3131)! They'll be happy to be your guides to answer anything! And check out the guide below for activity recommendations in Aspen.

Activities
2.65 mi
Distance
3,198 ft
Elevation
hard Ute Trail
A beautiful trail straight up Aspen mountain, first following some forest switchbacks to the left of town, opening up to climb an Aspen grove meadow, before finishing the climb up the ski slopes for the final third. This is an arduous up, up, and up trail, but there's nothing better than finishing at the top of the mountain, grab a bite at the Sundeck, and take the free gondola back down to town.
2.9 mi
Distance
807 ft
Elevation
moderate Smuggler Mountain Road
A popular road up to the top of Smuggler Mountain, following a dirt road all the way to the top. You'll have great vistas of Aspen and the surrounding mountains.
6.2 mi
Distance
2030 ft
Elevation
moderate American Lake
If you can hitch a ~15min ride down to Castle Creek, you'll walk up various ecosystems from Aspen groves to alpine meadows. At the top, there is a lovely lake to rest (might be a bit cold to swim!). Depending on the snow pack, there might be snow at the top part of the hike still in June.
5.3 mi
Distance
2060 ft
Elevation
moderate Cathedral Lake
Right next to American Lake is the Cathedral Lake hike. Both are very similar alpine climbs that end at picturesque lakes. Cathedral Lake is a little more straight shot up while American Lake begins with some switchbacks.
26.5 mi
Distance
7801 ft
Elevation
hard Four Pass Loop
If you are in the mood for a 2-3 day backpacking trip before or after the wedding, there is probably no more beautiful trail in Colorado than the Four Pass Loop. You will climb four mountain passes, camp by beautiful lakes, pass through Aspen groves, and see many marmots. If you are interested, ask Teika & Sam for advice on this beautiful trail (permits required)!
3.5 mi
Distance
688 ft
Elevation
easy Crater Lake
If you don't have time to do the full Four Pass Loop, but you still want to see the famous Maroon Bells, you can book in advance the bus from Aspen Highlands to hike to Crater Lake. It is an easy peaceful trail to Crater Lake, although later in the day the trail can be very crowded. If you go, we recommend continuing past Crater Lake where the crowds mellow out and the views get better.
16.9 mi
Distance
2788 ft
Elevation
hard Conundrum Hot Springs
Although usually done as an overnight backpacking trip, we have done it as a beautiful, although full-day, hike out and back to the hot springs. You should start very early in the day as it is a long climb to the hot springs. But, if you arrive early enough, you can have the springs to yourself and enjoy a beautiful swim!
1.8 mi
Distance
462 ft
Elevation
easy Lower Hunter Creek
Right from town, you can walk North along Hunter Creek. The lower part is very accessible, but for those more curious, you can continue on to Upper Hunter Creek. Just watch out for moose!
11.5 mi
Distance
2732 ft
Elevation
hard Sunnyside Trail
One of our favorite trails that goes up and around Red Mountain with beautiful views of Aspen Mountain. The first part of the trail is exposed, but then you head into an Aspen grove forest at the top. Rather than turning back, you can make this a longer loop by going down the Sunnyside Plunge and hiking back through Hunter Creek Valley.
6.3 mi
Distance
269 ft
Elevation
easy East of Aspen
An easy flat trail east of town. You walk through the North Star wildlife preserve where you can see eagles, moose, and the occasional bear! Teika's motto is "always be scanning!"
